ABOUT US

THE BEGINNING

It was 2009 Christmas when the Basque sportsmen association “Euskal Herriko Kirolariok”, as culmination of several meetings, decided to hold a festival of sports and claim, called “Kirolhaerria”, in the Anoeta velodrome in San Sebastian. More than 7.000 people met there and more than 2.000 declarations of support from Basque sportsmen and sportswomen from different disciplines were collected.

The event finished with a manifesto which emphasized the need to create a structure that would give answer to a social request: the Basque Country should have its own sports structure and achieve international representation in all sports.

At the very end of the event, all the sportsmen and sportswomen appeared on stage, headed by Mr. Iribar and Mr. Kortabarria, who showed de Basque flag, the same way they did in 1975 before the football game between Spanish Primera División Athletic Club and Real Sociedad teams (each one played in a team) in a time when the Basque flag hadn’t been legalized yet. That way, Euskal Herria Kirola was born: an organization created from the Basque sportsmen and sportswomen and the support showed at this event.

OUR AIMS

Taking into account that the Basque Country is a Nation without State, Euskal Herria Kirola is aimed to be the equivalent to any state’s Superior Council of Sports. This is what Euskal Herria Kirola was created for. Specifically, its action scope is limited to the 7 historical regions of Basque Country, filling the existing gap.

These are our main objectives:

  • The organization of leagues, cups, and competitions in all sports, within the Basque Country.
  • To work hard for the achievement of the Basque selections’ official character and to enable our sportsmen and clubs’ direct access to competitions at a European and worldwide level, managing their participation directly with the international federations, and when this not being possible, organizing alternative international competitions.
  • To achieve the international representation of the Basque sports.
  • The documentation and promotion of the Basque sports.
